Abstract

Those of us who are advocates of change are now very much at the receiving end as far as the training scene is concerned. Against all the rules of good change management however, there is a noticeable absence of direction and we are left in a period of uncertainty and confusion. Most of the ITBs are on their way out and the MSC is promoting a New Training Initiative which may well prove useful in providing certain key skills in the future but is unlikely to make a significant impact in tackling urgently the national disease of poor business productivity. As a result, the ball is now firmly back in the hands of management. For those who are brave enough to take up the cudgels, there is a golden opportunity to bring a new sense of purpose to training.

Abstract

THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION'S worsening financial position is a matter of general concern, and any constructive suggestions will no doubt be helpful to the Honorary Treasurer and others who plan our finances. The present Library Association structure is workable in practice, but it is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain, and a little thought begins to show the possibilities of economy, without any loss of effectiveness. The most important associated factor at the present time is the possibility of drastic local government reorganisation in 1974, only one year after the earliest date when Library Association subscriptions can be increased. The effect of this reorganisation, as at present proposed, on Library Association structure, needs to be borne in mind.

Abstract

This volume includes a selection from the papers, poems, and photo essays presented at the inaugural Conference on Consumer Culture Theory held in August 2006 on the campus of Notre Dame University. What we had hoped might become a regular conference to be held every two years, proved to be so popular that it is becoming an annual event. The second conference will take place in May 2007 at York University.

Abstract

Purpose

Student approaches to studying were explored in business courses with samples in China, Kuwait and the USA. Information on approaches to studying is critical as delivery and content of educational practices are increasingly adapted to different world regions.

Design/methodology/approach

The Revised Approaches to Studying Inventory (RASI) was administered to address the extent to which students focused studying on deep learning of concepts, surface learning/memorization of material or strategic maximization of grades.

Findings

Results suggested (1) acceptable reliability for the RASI scales, (2) higher mean scores on deep, surface and strategic approaches for the Kuwait versus the China or USA samples, and (3) an interaction effect between country sample and strategic studying on the dependent variable of reported grade point average.

Originality/value

The research focuses on student initiative in the educational process. Also, comparative evidence from the Middle Eastern context is provided. This area has received relatively little attention in the literature.

Abstract

The charge is clear. Ignoring the intrusion of reality, Jim Rettig asks you to create a reference service of ten sources on a desert island. Let's, then, imagine a primitive, yet pleasant spot where prospects of good health and food are matched by comfortable housing and a total lack of smiling, sincere television newscasters. Your companions are compatible, enjoy conversation, and are fond, particularly, of browsing in reference books. At this point the rules of experience, education and culture foretell the magic list of ten. One may name the works quickly, and without much need for discussion: World Book, World Almanac, Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the American Language, Oxford English Dictionary, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, Times Atlas of the World, Statistical Abstract of the U.S., United States Government Manual, Statesman's Yearbook, and the Dictionary of American Biography.

Abstract

IF SONS DID NOT EXTOL, many a worthy father would sink into oblivion and forever go unsung. As filial biographers, however, sons customarily meet with intimidating scorn and derision. There is a generally accepted notion that consanguineous biography is fraught more with fealty and filial frailty than with disinterested depiction. The best way to disprove this false assumption is to muster meritorious biographies written by scions and compare them with representative biographies of the ‘blame and blemish’ variety. Sympathetic assessment always stands up stronger than ostensible objectivity, for writers of the ‘warts and all’ kind of biography lose track of virtues and nearly always become engrossed in the imperfections of their victims.

Abstract

The Oxford Moat House was the venue for a Dinner Dance on Saturday 23rd March, organised by Mr John Russell of the ICT Council. This, the first, hopefully, of many such gatherings, was well supported with about 100 attending. Mr Russell intends to organise next year's social evening at the same venue.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.
